Music Session Info

DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION

We receive many questions during the year from singers inquiring about the Music Sessions and Debut Artist Award.  These guidelines will help you prepare your application:

Audition dates are coordinated by Board of Directors secretary, Ms. Dorene Marshall. The best time to apply is in early September, however, all applications for a Music Session audition date must be received no later than October 15.

The dates for the 2012 season are Nov. 2, 9, 30, Dec. 2, 14,  and 16. We generally hear approximately 150- 200 singers. From the field of auditioners, 35-40 Music Session participants and alternates are chosen. Finalists are the top performing 6-8 singers from the Music Sessions. In recent years, the artistic level of applicants has been very high-- several winners are now appearing in international performance venues.

The 2012 Music Session dates are Jan. 15, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, March 14, and 21.  Music Sessions are held in Bruno Walter Auditorium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • There is no citizenship or residence requirement.
  • There is no age requirement.
  • An accompanist will be provided however, singers may provide their own.
  • The participants or alternates for the Music Sessions are chosen from the live auditions held each fall.

TO APPLY FOR AN AUDITION: Please send:
    1) A completed Application (download is at the top of this page)
    2) An Audition fee of $40.00. Please make check payable to Joy In Singing.
Please DO NOT SEND CD's or headshots.

    FOR THE AUDITION:
  • 3 songs of your choice from the ART SONG repertoire- no arias or popular songbook selections should be programmed. Songs can be in any language.
  • Please bring a sample full length recital program
  • Singers chosen as Music Session participants or alternates will be contacted within a few weeks of the final audition date in December.

PLEASE NOTE: KEEP A RECORD OF THE PROGRAM YOU SUBMIT.
Music Session programming is drawn from the repertoire you submit at your live audition.

Debut Artist Award Finalists are chosen from those artists demonstrating the highest level of artistic  readiness during the Music Sessions.  The 2012 Joy In Singing Finals will be on April 4.

  • SINGERS PLEASE NOTE: if you are unavailable for the finals, you should postpone participation for this season.  Think ahead when submitting your full length sample program--- it is wise to prepare a program you will be ready to perform if chosen for the finals on April 4, 2012.  Successful award artists generally have a completely polished, performance ready program at least one month before the finals.

FINALIST Information: Singers advancing to the Finals are asked to offer a full length program of ART SONG (no arias or popular songbook selections).

Joy In Singing focuses on the RECITAL FORM. Please bear the following in mind when constructing your program:

    • The judges consider whether your submitted program serves your vocal and expressive range, and shows variety in mood and style.
    • Texts and translations of your program are required for the final round. These are due one week before final round date.

NOTE: If none of the finalists are judged as ready to give a solo recital, the judges reserve the right not to award the solo prize, or to award a shared recital prize in any given year.
