Globally acclaimed as one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, Christa Ludwig performed for nearly fifty years, then continued to teach Master Classes for an additional quarter century.

Über allen Gipfeln

Ist Ruh,

In allen Wipfeln

Spürest du

Kaum einen Hauch;

Die Vögelein schweigen
im Walde.

Warte nur, balde

Ruhest du auch.

Ludwig - schubert.jpg

Over all hilltops

Is peace,

In all treetops

You sense

Hardly a breath;

The little birds are silent
in the wood.

Wait, soon

You shall rest too

Wandrers Nachtlied II, Schubert D. 768

In Memoriam
Ludwig at 90.jpg

CHRISTA LUDWIG
MARCH 16, 1928 — APRIL 24, 2021

Christa Ludwig, internationally beloved and honored as one of the twentieth century's greatest vocal artists, has died at 93. Her vocalism was characterized as being always emotionally direct, exhibiting seamless legato, flawless diction, nuance, and a velvet timbre.

Ms. Ludwig's legacy of operatic, oratorio, orchestral concert, and song recital performances spanned nearly five decades. Upon retiring from the stage in 1994, she began a new musical chapter teaching Master Classes and mentoring aspiring classical singers, which continued until she reached her 90th birthday.  ("Jetzt habe ich das Recht faul zu sein!") Her generosity of spirit, infectiously engaging personality, and humor will be missed as much as her vocal artistry and wisdom.

"In times where personalities are thinly sown, we have first class, yes excellent, musical practitioners, who lack intuition, imagination, and a feeling for composers, who, even though they lived in the past, can speak to us about today. Courage is needed to reveal one's own feelings in interpretation and not tell the audience with raised forefinger: "The composer wanted it like this, and no other way." But at the same time we singers must never forget that we are only the servants of the great minds who created all the wonderful pieces of music we enjoy today."  Christa Ludwig
