In Memoriam
Teresa Berganza

Beloved mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza has died in Madrid in May, age 89.

Admired for her warm toned voice and precise coloratura, she specialized in the operas of Mozart and Rossini and later became, in the words of Herbert von Karajan, “the Carmen of the century”.

In recital she charmed the Carnegie Hall aficionados (in dove gray silk with matching slippers) with model mélodies and lieder, a lesson in European elegance.

Ms. Berganza's death adds to the list of great Spanish female singers we have lost, which includes Victoria de Los Angeles and Montserrat Caballé.  Is this the end of an era?
